How to Get Flat Abs
Most people think by doing tons of crunches and ab work will help you get flat abs. know In fact, there are two factors involved:
What Muscles create “Flat Abs?”
Muscles of the anterior abdominal region consist of:
- Rectus Abdominis
- Internal and External Obliques
- Transverse abdominis
How do Flat Abs function to create a stronger core?
The main goal of a “functional” core is just… that to function properly, not to look good. Most people consider a functioning core as being flat and sexy, but again that is not the case. During my years of training numerous individuals and athletes, I have encountered over-weight individual embarrass thin, seemingly “in-shape,” individuals.
Flat abs, or a functioning core, is the base for all movements of the body. Without strength within the core region we would all be noodles, without stable areas to produce strong motions of our arms and legs.
How does a strong core create an overall stronger body?
Core strength will no only help with creation of powerful movement of the arms and legs (ie: pitching, running, etc) but also protect the body from injury. As the abs and core region becomes stronger, it protects the lower back from developing disc herniations, sprains and strains. Disc herniations are a severe form of instability of the lower back, which can lead to impingement of spinal nerve roots, otherwise known as sciatica (leg pain).
Exercise to develop Flat Abs
Here are a few popular exercises that may help in getting flat abs:
- Side Plank
- Exercise Ball Crunches
- Vertical Leg Crunches
- Reverse Crunches
Examples of all of these are easy to find on YouTube or Google
TRX or Cross Core suspension training are excellent options as well. The instable nature of the suspension trainers forces the body to use the abs and rest of the core for stability as the arms and legs move.
