How do I know if I have Shin Splints?

Shins splints typically present within the soft muscular area by the front of the shin, although pain and tightness can be felt in the deep back portion as well.  It is usually felt as a “gripping.”  Even though you may have the symptoms of shin splints, several other conditions maybe present such as a stress fracture, deep vein thrombosis, or compartment syndrome.  Make sure you consult a qualified medical professional with any pain or injuries you maybe experiencing and very attempt to diagnosis your conditions.

What are Shin Splints?

Shin Splints occur when the tibialis anterior or posterior muscles are damaged, which can be due to overtraining, biomechanical abnormalities, or gait abnormalities.  This can occur from using the wrong type of shoes or even running.

Damaged tissue heals via fibrosis and scaring to micro-tears.  This is the start of the cumulative trauma cycle.  Scar tissue is the body’s natural way of healing but it also causes the muscle to become tighter.  Tight muscles pulls harder on bone and can actually pull the “skin” (periosteum) off the bone.  This process will cause severe irritation and pain, known as shin splints.

Who gets Shin Splints?

•    Runners
•    Triathletes
•    Dancers
•    Jumpers
•    Any other person who stands or is on their feet for prolonged periods of time

What are some common treatments for Shin Splints?

•    Rest
•    Ice
•    Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
•    Extracorporeal shockwave therapy
•    Orthotics
•    Physical Therapy (ultrasound, muscle stimulation)

With ineffective treatment, Shin Splints can last for months.

What can Active Release Techniques® do for Shin Splints?

Active Release Techniques® is a patented form of soft tissue care, which is very effective at removing the scar tissue and decreasing the spasm within soft tissue. ART® providers have the ability to specifically identify each muscle and fascial structure in the calf leading to dramatic results in significantly less time.  Many times patients have reported a significant decrease in pain within 4 – 6 treatments!

How is it possible for P3 Sports Care providers to heal Shin Splints faster than other treatments?

At P3 Sports Care, we are able to address the entire problem and not just address the symptoms.  Many providers only address the soft tissue scarring but never address the root cause and underlying strength issues, which will prevent the condition from returning.  Here is our thought process:

  1. Remove scar tissue from damaged tissue
  2. Strengthen damaged tissue (because it will function only after the scarring is removed)
  3. Analyze your running/ walking gait pattern (as many cases of shin splints are caused by other dysfunction)

We are able to fix about 90% of cases of Shin Splints at P3 Sports Care.
