How do I know if I have Plantar Fasciitis?
Many times patients think they have Plantar Fasciitis if they experiencing any type of foot pain in any location on the foot. The fact is, the plantar fascia is only one of the many structures on the bottom of the foot that can cause pain. Commonly foot pain does not come from the plantar fascia, but rather one of these other small muscles of the foot. An example is someone who has pain on the middle arch of the foot. This is not the plantar fascia!
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
As stated before, much of the foot pain experienced by athletes and average Joes are not actually Plantar Fasciitis, but a spasm of one of the other muscles of the foot. Classic Plantar Fasciitis is when the plantar fascia (a tough strip of tissue on the bottom of the foot) becomes inflamed from multiple tears and overuse. The body will deposit scar tissue in these small tears in an effort to heal the soft tissue. In turn, this scar tissue will cause the plantar fascia to become tight and less stretchy; which makes it more prone to future tears and inflammation. This cycle is what you see when you develop Plantar Fasciitis.
Who gets Plantar Fasciitis?
Runners, Basketball players, Football players, Baseball players, Dancers, Students…. And the list goes on. Do you see a trend? Anyone who is on their feet much of the day can develop Plantar Fasciitis. This includes workers at grocery store and factories as well.
What are some common treatments of Plantar Fasciitis?
• Rest
• Orthotics
• Corticosteroid injections
• Surgery
One statistic you should keep in mine is:
• 95% of all Plantar Fasciitis patients find a resolution to their pain by the use of non-surgical methods; however, it is not uncommon for the condition to last upwards towards a year, even with treatment.
Why do you think this is?
• Because they are only addressing the plantar fascia!
• They are not finding and treating all the muscles involved in the injury!
What can Active Release Techniques® do for Plantar Fasciitis?
It’s great to know that most patients do not need surgery to resolve their Plantar Fasciitis, but to be in pain for more than a year is not acceptable. ART® providers have the ability to specifically identify each muscle and fascial structure in the foot and calf in need of attention, leading to dramatic results in significantly less time. Many times patients have reported a significant decrease in pain within 4 treatments!
How is it possible for ART® providers to heal Plantar Fasciitis faster than other treatments?
ART® providers find the origin of your problem, regardless of the injury. Many times your Plantar Fasciitis has stemmed from a biomechanical problem elsewhere in the lower half of the body. ART® providers will look at more than just your foot. Problems can start in the calf, knee, hip and even as high as the lower back. Problems at these locations will be addressed, leading to complete and rapid resolution in your injury.
