Suspension & TRX Rip Trainer

When choosing the correct exercise equipment for our facility we looked at what we needed to accomplish.  Athletics require strength and the ability to use that strength quickly.  Resistance training definitely can increase an athlete’s raw strength but we needed something to help with explosiveness.

Why we need explosiveness? Explosiveness is the ability of an athlete to exert force with a limited amount of time. This means strong but it also quick. Explosiveness is a very valuable trait scouts for colleges and major athletic teams look for in prospects.

There’s been some good research on how to train explosiveness in athletics, which helped us decided on a tactic.

Numerous studies show optimum loads for power exercises, such as jumps and ballistic motions, are best within the 15 to 60% range (1,2).

Another study showed dramatic improvements in maximum jump and maximum power output from training with bodyweight jump squats alone. That’s not to say training with increased loads will not help maximum power output and jump height but it does show even something simple as modifying body weight in plyometric training, such as TRX suspension training and cross core, will produce results (4).

The traditional way of training for explosiveness has been with Olympic lifts.  When used properly these lifts they are excellent training tools, however for many people they are very intimidating. Suspension training and the TRX Rip Trainer provide a less intimidating way for those no longer interested in Olympic lifts.

In fact studies have shown measured improvements in vertical jump in his little as 3 weeks using non-weightlifting tactics for increasing an athletes’ explosiveness (5).

Here’s some footage of our TRX Rip Trainer in action. It’s important to note these devices have a learning curve involved. Not all athletes demonstrate the coordination to pick up these movements immediately. Ideally what we’re looking for is around 10 reps before switching to a new motion.  Studies by Baker and Newton have shown reps 2 through 5 (of a set of 10) are actually the most powerful and beneficial. All reps afterwards are affected by muscle fatigue, lack of energy, and therefore demonstrate declining performance (3).
